‘Drunk’ Audi driver led police on 80mph chase with no lights on across park

Dramatic footage captures the moment a reckless Audi driver led police on a dangerous 80mph chase – in the dark without any headlights on.

Spencer Bassett, 22, sped through residential streets and across parkland as he tried to evade officers on Boxing Day last year. Shocking dash-cam footage also shows the suspected drink driver travelling on the wrong side of a dual carriageway as he fled in his Audi A3.

Sergeant Mitch Darby can be heard calmly telling colleagues on his radio as Bassett sped through a park: ‘So we’re going to go off road. I thought this would happen. Its a small area of grassland. So it is appropriate to follow at this time.

‘I’ve done this route before on pursuits and at this time of night there’s going to be no pedestrians around. It is appropriate to continue.’

Bassett eventually gave up and came to a stop in Marshmont Way, Kingstanding, Birmingham, where he was arrested at taser-point.

He went on to plead guilty to dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen and was jailed for 12 months at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.

Bassett, of Kelynmead Road, Lea Hall, Birmingham, will also be banned from the road for two years upon his release.

Sgt Darby, of West Midlands Police, said afterwards: ‘Bassett was determined to try and avoid being caught which included recklessly driving without his headlights on.

‘The advanced driving training kicked in and we were able to ensure he didn’t escape punishment and must serve time behind bars.’
